It started like this. In 1996, 12 invitations were sent to women in Ramsey, NJ. The invitation read, “Get together, have fun, drink, eat, and share new recipes!” The plan was to meet once a month to enjoy food (lotsa food!), wine (yeah..lotsa wine!), and each other’s company. The original hostess was named Suzie Underhill. She had just moved to Ramsey from England, and this was her way to meet some new neighbors. 13 women showed up that first night, and the Recipe Club was born. 23 years later, dear Suzie has moved on, but Recipe Club is still going strong, fortified by over two decades of laughter, loyalty, and love. At our monthly Recipe Club gatherings, we have a cardinal rule. When indulging in the abundant and delectable spread of appetizers, entrees, desserts--and plenty of wine, of course--no one is to supposed to talk about calories or carbs or chastise any dish as being fattening or unhealthy. I will mention that we are a room of middle aged women. Are we concerned about our health? Yup! Do we do our best to work out and watch our waistlines? Absolutely! (Who doesn’t at our age?)
Yet, we can say this with confidence: Not one of us has ever narrowed an artery or added an ounce of fat to our love handles during these very special evenings with our Recipe Club girlfriends. How can this be so? Because, we believe that when you eat and drink with a pure heart—full of gratitude and love for both the cuisine and for the wonderful humans around you—you will experience Immaculate Digestion. Can we prove that? Well...no. We can't. But the best of miracles and magic do not come with proof, right? You just gotta believe!
